Lago di Sorapiss

It's already October and I'm a little late with posting these stories from Dolomites, where we were two weeks ago. It took me a while to edit the pictures and write everything down, but the Dolomites are always special and wonderful and I wouldn't want to forget them in a few days.

Despite the fact that it was September, the mornings were already quite cold, the temperature was a little below zero. But in the van under the blanket, it was warm and cozy, so it wasn't very easy to get up. When the sun rose above the mountains, the cold mornings were soon forgotten. The tops of the hills were already whitened and it would be unwise to climb up there without proper equipment. Nevertheless, there are endless possibilities for hikes that are not only less demanding, but also beautiful.

On the first day, our destination was Lake Sorapis. It is necessary to drive from Cortina d'Ampezzo to the Tre Croci pass (1805 m). It wasn't crowded on the pass and it was easy to find a place where we spent the night in a van. Next day at the pass, we chose route 215, which leads us towards the lake. From here it is necessary to continue on foot to the lake, which lasts for two hours or a little more, depending on the amount of stops and photos you take. The path descends and rises slightly. It is well arranged and wide. First, it leads through the forest and occasionally offers wonderful views to Lake Misurina and the Tre cime next to Monte Cristallo. After about an hour of walking, the path becomes a little more challenging, but it is well secured with steel lines.

A little before Rifugio Alfonso Vandeli, which is on the left side, we continued to the right towards the lake. After just a few steps, we saw a beautiful lake, hidden in the lap of the mountains. The color of the lake is wonderful. I simply couldn't believe that the lake looks exactly like in the pictures.

Visiting the lake is a very popular hiking trail. Although it was already September, many visitors had gathered there. Nevertheless, we found our own place where we could enjoy the view of the lake and have a snack. Then we went around the lake. Because of the dry summer, it was quite small and we could walk on its bottom.
One last view of the lake. It's hard for me to believe that it's completely real and that I took the photos myself.

  2. So wonderful to return to the Dolomites via your blog. We visited in May 2017, staying in Cortina. We hiked back from Faloria after taking the cable car up one day. Another day was spent at Cinque Torri and up to Refugio Nuvolau. Rail trail - Landro to Cortina and a magnificent day circumnavigating Tre Cime!
