our garden in August 2024

Last summer we had constant rain, this year we have no rain at all. It's not so bad all over the country, but here in our region, it hasn't been raining for two months. Longer nights brought some relief, but it's still very hot. At the moment some dahlias and zinnias are blooming in the garden. They should be watered more regularly and abundantly, but our water supply is running out.
Lansko poletje je stalno deževalo, letos pa dežja sploh ni. Tu posebej izstopa naše območje, kjer imamo že dva meseca vroče in suho vreme. Daljše noči so sicer prinesle malo olajšanja, vendar je še vedno zelo vroče. Trenutno na vrtu cvetijo dalije in cinije. Zalivati bi jih morali malo več in pogosteje, vendar deževnica v našem zalogovniku hitro zmanjkuje.
Tomatoes in the greenhouse are watered constantly and are doing well. Lots of them are still green.
Paradižniki v rastlinjaku imajo redno zalivanje. Čeprav dobro uspevajo, je še vedno veliko zelenih.
Cherry tomatoes are my favourite. Small, round, red and tasty.
Jaz imam najraje češnjevce. Majhni, okrogli, rdeči in okusni.
Aronia berries are a superfood. They tolerate dry periods, which is a huge advantage.
Aronija je super hrana. Dobro prenaša suha obdobja, kar je letos pomembna prednost.
This year I planted chickpeas for the first time. They are easy to grow and like hot summers. Each of the pods usually contain a single chickpea, but in our case a pod often has a twin pea.
Letos sem na vrt prvič posadila čičeriko. Ta nima posebnih zahtev in ima rada vroča poletja. Strok ponavadi vsebuje samo eno zrno čičerike, v mojem primeru pa je veliko strokov imelo dve zrni.
The last post in the month should be about gardening and flowers and little precious moments, but lately it is a weather report.
Zadnja objava v mesecu bi morala biti o vrtnarjenju, rožah in majhnih dragocenih trenutkih. Zadnje čase pa je bolj vremensko poročilo.

  1. I remember dealing with drought, and we were not trying to grow vegetables.
Can you eat chick peas fresh and green - or do they still need cooking?

  3. So sorry to read that your summer hasn't seen enough rain, Sara. Your tomatoes seemed to have thrived on all the watering. I just love the tomato heart!

  4. We have severe drought in our area almost constantly........but this past week we had the most wonderful rain. You still grow such lovely flowers and vegetables even while dealing with the lack of plentiful water! It's all beautiful!
