planine nad Sočo / alpine pastures above the river Soča

We spent sunny Sunday wandering through the mountain pastures below Mt. Krn. There is still some snow at the top of Krn, whereas snowdrops are already blooming in the valley. We walked somewhere in the middle, along the border between spring and winter.
There are quite a few alpine pastures in the hills above the Soča river and in the summertime, it is quite lively there. Cows and cattle grazed on the meadows and traditional Tolmin cheese is made there. In mid-February, however, we met only a few mountaineers.
We started from the pasture Kuhinja continued to the pasture Leskovca, climbed to the pasture Sleme, then descended to the mountain pastures Medrje and Pretovč and returned to the starting point. It was a circular path, a little uphill to the snow border, then downhill into the valley, enjoying the sunny day.

  3. Incredible landscapes as always. I hope there are wild flowers to see in those mountain pastures later in the year.

    1. Actually, the meadows are rather dull now, but in summer many alpine flowers can be seen there.

  4. Dynamic nature of mountains and small lovely flowers, active climber and quiet cottages nestled in the valley; I like the contrast. Thanks for your visit.

  6. Are the houses up in the snow only for summer and cheese making?

    1. During the winter the houses are abandoned, but during the summer season some people make cheese there and take care of animals.
